Music Biography

In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Bill Buchman is a top flight jazz pianist. His style covers a wide range and crosses over the usual borders. Bill performs at select events throughout the year.
Bill studied piano at the New England Conservatory of Music and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees there. Bill studied for many years with Jaki Byard and Ran Blake, two leading exponents of jazz and Third Stream music. He has played with many jazz greats such as Jo Jones (of Count Basie fame), Red Callender, Alan Dawson, Sammy Rimington, John La Porta, and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. Bill has performed widely in a variety of concerts and other venues in the United States, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark. Bill’s group, through the years, has featured New Orleans jazz, music of the swing era, boogie woogie, modern and latin jazz. Bill’s CD, “Out of The Blue” is played on National Public Radio jazz programs throughout the US and was among the top 50 new jazz releases on the “Jazz Week” chart for several weeks in March of 2004.
Bill’s group called “Bill Buchman’s Art of Jazz All-Stars” performs at various venues in the Tampa Bay area and features top players. For the 2003-2004 season the band had a resounding success performing weekends at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Sarasota. The band has included such stellar musicians as saxophonist Lew Del Gatto (of the “Saturday Nite Live” band), trumpeter Dan Miller (of the Harry Connick Jr. band), John La Porta (of the Woody Herman band), and bassist Kenny Fitzgerald (of the Harry James band) or Richard Drexler (has played with nearly everybody) and drummer Frank Shea (of the Bobby Hackett orch.).
Bill is very busy with his art activities these days but his love for the music keeps him appearing with his trio with some regularity at various venues and events around Sarasota.
Bill says, about his music, “Jazz is an art and that’s the level we strive for. Our music is all about joy, spontaneity, warmth, and depth.
