Painting is thought in action. My paintings examine issues of meaning, content, and the ambiguity of communication that are central to both human interaction and visual art. My process is about transforming the elements of life into signs and colors that explore and push the boundaries of the abstract gesture. I have been actively engaged in this process through research, study and active painting for more than fifty years. It is an approach built on the foundation of my study of Zen and Modernist ideas and my experience as a musical improviser (I am a jazz pianist too). With these roots I have endeavored to organically grow a contemporary painting language that would speak to today. As part of this process I have invented my own unique paint formulas and other innovations in paint technology to facilitate, intensify and advance my work process and outcomes.
